Materials List

Lion Brand Ferris Wheel Yarn which is a #4 weight 100% acrylic yarn. I used colorway: Vintage Carousel.**
Red Heart Stripes is another great colorful choice Many colors to choose from.**
Or any colorful yarn of your choice!**
Button: 1/2 inch diameter.**

REGULAR crochet hook. I used 6.0mm. **
Scissors **
Yarn needle I used: Susan Bates Finishing Needles (I love these by the way!) **
Measuring tape **

Stiches Used and Abbreviations

Ch= chain

St = stitch

SC = single crochet

Sl st = slip stich

TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch (Pull up loop in 2^nd vertical bar and each vertical bar, accumulating loops on your hook, finish with pulling up a loop in the last edge stitch by going between the outer 2 threads and the inner 3^rd thread of that end stitch. – see video for help)

NRP = Normal return pass (yarn over- pull through 1 loop, *(yarn over – pull through 2 loops) Repeat * until 1 loop remains on hook)

Instructions

Crochet Hook prep: Wrap rubber band around the very end of your crochet hook multiple times to create a “stop” that will keep loops from falling off.

Measure Your Lantern – measure the circumference around your mug at the widest point.

Begin: Chain a row of chains equal to the length around your lantern. (40 chains if using same materials as used in video: Ferris Wheel and mini lantern. See Materials list.)

Foundation Row 1: Pull up a loop in the back bump in the second chain from the hook and each bump thereafter. You should have the same number of loops as chains you made. (40 loops using Ferris Wheel Yarn and mini lantern)

Work NRP, Normal Return Pass: yarn over- pull through 1 loop, *(yarn over –pull through 2 loops)* repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook

Tip: Count the loops on your hook at the end of each forward pass. It should always be the same number of chains that you started with.

Row 2 TSS (Tunisian Simple Stitch) in each st across. NRP (Normal Return Pass) back. See video for step by step help with these techniques.

Repeat Row 2 until piece is as high as the light portion of your lantern. In my video example that was approximately 4” and a total of 12 rows in Ferris Wheel yarn.

Bind Off and Finishing slip stitch bind off in TSS:

Bind off in slip stitch crochet: See video tutorial for complete instructions on slip stitch bind off.

DON’T CUT YARN.

Fold piece in half with wrong side facing out.

Slip stitch the two ends together. DON’T CUT YARN.

Button Strap/Toggle/Closure

Fold flat the tube you’ve formed with the joined edge at one side. With same yarn, chain a length that spans across the top of the tube and down the side about 1 inch.
SC in 5^th chain from the hook (this forms button hole) and each chain to the end.
Remove loop from hook. Insert hook into top edge stich of tube next to the join and pull that loop through.Turn work. Now SC in each SC out towards the ch4 space. Make 5 SC in the ch4 space (buttonhole).
Continue SC in the bottom portion of the orginal starting chain of the button strap back towards the tube.
Secure with slip st to the top edge of the tube. Ch1, cut yarn, and pull yarn through.

Sew in the ends. Enjoy!
