The Ocean Waves Crochet Shawl Pattern
This is a shawl that looks complicated, but if you just trust yourself, even an advanced beginner should be able to handle it. You can use any yarn and hook size you like, but I used plied color changing cake yarn and a slightly larger hook to create a beautiful lacy look. The one pictured here is a shawlette size (54” wide and about 22” tall) but you can easy make yours as long as you like. Video Tutorial – scroll down below.

Important Notes
Take your time getting used to plied yarn. Don’t get discouraged. It will feel a little flimsy at first, but just trust it and pretty soon you will have the hang of working with this type of yarn.

Here is a tutorial on how to make easy button toggles for your shawl. (see images below and at website. Links below.)
Instructions (Pattern chart available in PDF Pattern: ETSY or RAVELRY or LOVECRAFTS.)
Chain as long (wide) as you want your shawl to be across. Your stitch count should be multiples of 12 +2.
For one like the picture, using Red Heart It’s a Wrap Rainbow Yarn and J (6.00mm) hook, I chained 168+2=170 chains to start.
This will give you 13 full fans plus 2 half fans on either end of the shawl.
In this pattern, I refer to turning chains as “last dc.”
Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: ch 3, 2 dc in 1st dc, ch 2, sk next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc, [5 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc] across, 3 dc in last dc. Turn.
Row 3: ch 3, dc in 2nd dc, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, [ {dc in next dc, ch 1} four times, dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 2] across, {dc in next dc, ch 1} twice, dc in last dc. Turn.
Row 4: ch 4, dc in 2nd dc, ch 2, dc in next dc, [ {dc in next dc, ch 2} four times, dc in next dc] across, {dc in next dc, ch 2} twice, dc in last dc. Turn.
Row 5: ch 3, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in sp between next 2 dc, [ {2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc} three times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in sp between next 2 dc ] across, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, 3 dc in last ch sp. Turn.
Row 6: ch 3, 2 dc in 1st dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc, [5 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 3 dc] across, 3 dc in last dc.
Repeat Rows 3-6, ending on any row that you like. I ended mine on Row 4.
Finishing
With yarn needle sew in loose ends.
