Fast Free Pattern & Tutorial: “Summer Soap Cozy”

Free Crochet Pattern: Summer Soap Cozy

Learn the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and Tunisian Reverse Stitch (TRS) with this beginner project – a quick and simple soap cozy and scrubby.

(See Video Tutorial below!)

This luxurious soap cozy will be a nice addition to a relaxing bath or shower.

Use the softer side for your face and the more ridged side for exfoliation on the rest of your body.

The drawstring makes it easy to hang up on your shower head for easy drying.

You can make one in about 30-40 minutes or even faster once you’ve made a couple. These make great gifts for friends, family, co-workers, or your child’s teacher. (Or for YOURSELF!!)

No new equipment needed!! Just a regular crochet hook and a rubber band.

This little mini-project only requires

  • a REGULAR
    crochet hook + rubber band
  • Cotton Yarn

Stiches Used and Abbreviations

Ch= chain

St = stitch

SK= skip stitch

Sl st = slip stich

SC = single crochet

TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch

TRS = Tunisian Reverse Stitch

NRP = Normal return pass (yarn over- pull through 1 loop, yarn over – pull through 2 loops until 1 loop remains on hook)

Instructions

Crochet Hook prep: Wrap rubber band around the very end of your crochet hook multiple times to create a “stop” that will keep loops from falling off.

Measure Your Soap Bar – measure around your soap bar on the narrow side.

FRONT HALF

Begin:  Chain a row of odd numbered chains equal to the length half way around your soap bar plus an extra stitch or two so it’s not too snug. In the video tutorial, I chained 13.

Foundation Row 1: SC into back bump of first chain and each chain to the end. Turn work.

Row 2 Ch1, SC in first SC, *(Ch1, SK st, SC in next SC)* Repeat to end. Turn work.

Row 3 (Begin Tunisian Crochet)

*(Insert hook into ch space and pull up a loop, Insert hook into sc and pull up a loop)* Repeat to end.

You should have the same number of loops as chains you made. (In video tutorial 13 loops)

Work NRP, Normal Return Pass: yarn over- pull through 1 loop, *(yarn over –pull through 2 loops)* repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook

Tip: Count the loops on your hook at the end of each forward pass. It should always be the same number of chains that you started with.

Row 4 TRS in each st across. NRP back.

Row 5 TSS in each st across. NRP back.

Repeat Row 4 and 5 until your piece covers the front half of your soap bar. (see video tutorial at 15:31 timestamp.)

BACK HALF

Row 6 TSS in each st across. NRP back.

Repeat Row 6 until back half is almost as long as the front half minus about ½ – 1 inch. In the video this is another 14 rows.

Row 7 Ch1, Work a row of SC bind off starting with the very first vertical bar. (see video tutorial at 17:30 timestamp) You should have the same number of single crochet stitches. In the video example that would be 13. Turn work.

Row 8 Ch1, SC in very first st, *(ch1, sk st, sc in next st)* repeat to the end. Turn work.

Row 9 Ch1, sc in first st, *(sc in ch space, sc in next st)* repeat to the end.

DON’T CUT yarn.

Finishing

Fold in half with the right side facing in. Using same working yarn, slip stitch the two sides together. (see video at 21:10 timestamp). Cut yarn and sew in ends.

Sew other side together and sew in ends.

Turn the pocket inside out.

Drawstring

Chain a drawstring approximately 1.5 times as long as the circumference of the pocket opening. In the video example I did 38 chains.

Thread the chain through the eyelet holes. (See video at 29:30 timestamp)

Connect the two ends of the drawstring using slip stitching for about 6-8 stitches. (See video at 32:00 timestamp)

Cut yarn and sew in ends.
