This is a quick and easy crochet pattern for a Hot Pad / Trivet and Coaster Set where you will learn the Crochet Block Stitch pattern. See video tutorial below and the free pattern instructions below.
To use this as a potholder (for holding hot pot handles) simply make an identical-sized square in double crochet and sew it to the back of this hot pad.

Materials List
- Lion Brand Re-Up Yarn which is a #4 weight 100% cotton yarn. I used colors: White, Grey, Aqua (green), and Sky (blue)
You can also use:
- Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton ** (thin #4 weight yarn)
- Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie”** (#4 weight yarn)
- Lily’s Sugar n Cream ”** (#4 weight yarn)
- Bernat Handicrafters Cotton Yarn ** (#4 weight yarn)
- Or any cotton yarn of your choice!
- REGULAR crochet hook. I used 5.5mm and 6.0mm. **
- Scissors **
- Yarn needle I used: Susan Bates Finishing Needles (I love these by the way!) **
- Measuring tape **

Ch= chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
Sl St = slip stitch
Ch Sp = chain space
St(s) = stitch(es)
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrasting Color (see color chart below)

Color Chart Instructions
Instructions
Begin: See the color chart above for the color order for each row for Hot Pad/Trivet and Coaster. You can create your own palette with the blank chart included.
To change the size, chain multiples of 3 +2+9
Hot Pad : Chain 38 Coaster: Chain 23
To make without hanging loop chain 9 less.
Row 1: Main Color (MC)
Slip st in 10th Ch from the hook.
Ch2 (does not count as st here nor elsewhere in the pattern), DC in the same ch as where sl st was made.
DC in each ch to the end. Pull the loop out to hold the place or use a stitch marker.
Do NOT Turn work. STITCH COUNT: Trivet: 29 DC’s Coaster: 14 DC’s
Row 2: Contrasting Color (CC)
Join CC yarn in between the 1st and 2nd DC at the Right-Hand Side of the row you just finished (Remember to ignore the ch2)
Ch1, SC in same space where joined yarn, *(Ch2, sk3 sts, SC between 3rd DC you just skipped and the 4th DC)* Repeat * to * across the row ending with SC between the 2nd to last and the last DC. STITCH COUNT: Trivet: 10 SC’s Coaster: 5 SC’s
Turn Work
Row 3: MC
Pick up onto hook the loop you left open/at st marker in R1.
Ch2, DC into 1st DC of R1, *(3DC in Ch2 sp)* Repeat * to * across the row, ending with a DC in last DC of R1.
Pull loop out or place marker to hold this loop.
Do NOT Turn work. STITCH COUNT: Trivet: 29 DC’s Coaster: 14 DC’s
Row 4: Repeat R2
TRIVET/ HOT PAD
Row 5 – 19 Alternate R3, R2 using color chart as guide.
COASTER
Row 5 – 7 Alternate R3, R2 using color chart as guide.
Finishing:
Turn work.
Side A Ch1, SC in each DC across, 3SC into corner st.
Side B 3 SC along the vertical side of each DC & Ch2 combined, working in the CC tails as you go. 3SC at corner st.
Side C SC in each starting chain across, work 10-12 SC around hanging loop.
Side D 3 SC along the vertical side of each DC, working in the CC tails as you go. 3SC at corner st.
End with sl st into first SC of finishing edge. Cut yarn, Pull yarn through loop. Sew in Ends.
