Introducing the “Holiday Crochet Ornament”
Learn to Crochet Around a Ball
This is a fast and simple holiday decoration you can make with crochet. In this pattern you will learn how to crochet around a ball. All you need is a holiday ball approximately 3 inches in diameter, some sport yarn and a 3.5mm hook. Links to the lighted orbs and possible yarns below. What colors will you choose?

Materials:
Approximately 50 yards of sport weight (#2) yarn in cotton or any other material. I used:
YARNS
- Cotton Kings 8/4 yarn in White. This is the Yarn I used. Other options:
- Red Heart Comfort Sport Yarn, White **
- YarnandSocks Cotton Select **
- Bernat Big Ball Baby Solid Yarn **
- Cotton Select Sport Weight Yarn **
- Baby Soft Bamboo Cotton Yarn **
- Lion Brand Yarn Sock-Ease Yarn **
NOTIONS
- 3.5mm crochet hook **
- Scissors **
- Yarn needle I used: Susan Bates Finishing Needles (Easiest to use) **
- Measuring tape **
OTHER MATERIALS
- Lighted Orbs – 3 inch diameter or any 3” Christmas ball.

Dimensions
Covers an approximately 3” holiday ball
Stiches Used and Abbreviations
Ch= chain
St(s) = stitch(es)
Sp = Space
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
Sl st = slip stich
Instructions
NOTES: If using heavier weight yarn, you can experiment with less chains in R7 to get right fit.
Begin:
Round 1: Chain 15 and Sl St into first ch to form circle.
Round 2: Ch4 (counts as first DC,Ch1), *( DC, Ch1)* 13 times. Join with sl st to3rd Ch of Ch4.
<St Count: 12 DC, and 12 Ch1 spaces>
Round 3: *(Ch4, SC into next DC)*, Repeat 13 times. Ch4 Join with Sl St to base of first Ch4.
<St Count: 14 Ch4 Spaces>
Round 4: Sl St x 2 along the first ch4 space from R3. Ch3 (counts as DC), DC in same Ch4 space, Ch3, *(2DC in next Ch4 Sp, Ch3)* Repeat to the end. Join with Sl St to 3rd ch of starting ch3. <St Count: 28 DC, and 14 Ch3 spaces>
Round 5: Sl St x 3 to center of first ch3 space from R4. *(Ch7, SC into next Ch3 space)* Repeat 13 times, Ch7 and Join with Sl St to base of first Ch7). <St Count: 14 Ch7 Sps >
Round 6: Sl St x 4 to center of first Ch7 sp from R5. *(Ch3, SC in next Ch7 sp)* repeat 13 times. Ch3 and Join with Sl St to base of first Ch3). <St Count: 14 Ch3 Sps >
Round 7: Sl St x 2 to center of first Ch3 sp from R6. *(Ch11, SC in next Ch3 sp)* repeat 13 times. Ch11 and Join with Sl St to base of first Ch11). <St Count: 14 Ch11 Sps >
Insert Your Ornament Bulb Now
Round 8: Sl St x 6 to center of first Ch11 sp from R7. *(Sl St in next Ch11 sp)* repeat 13 times. Join with Sl St to first Ch11. <St Count: 14 Sl Sts >
Create Hanging Cord
Chain 20 to 50 depending on how long you want your hanging cord to be.
Bind off and secure to the opposite side of the top of the ball with either a SC or Sl St or by tying a knot.
Finishing: Cut yarn. Bind off. Sew in all remaining ends.
