Introducing the “Sideways Wavy Knit Hat & Cowl Set”
Learn to MakeTunisian Knit, Purl, Full Stitch
Learn the Tunisian crochet Knit Stitch, Purl Stitch, and Full stitch in this cowl that creates Vertical Traveling Waves.
The ripples are made with a series of increases and decreases. It is an 8 stitch repeat with 2 main alternating sections of 5 rows each.

YARNS
You will need: approximately 400-500 yards (or more) of bulky weight (#5) yarn for this pattern depending on size you make.
I used approximately 2 skeins of Lion Brand Color Made Easy in “Prism” (247 yards each) to make both the hat & cowl.**

NOTIONS
- Tunisian Hook: Denise Tunisian Crochet Hook 9.0 mm or size to obtain gauge**
- Scissors **
- Yarn needle I used: Susan Bates Finishing Needles (Easiest to use) **
- Measuring tape **

Pattern Instructions
Difficulty Level
Moderate. Advanced Beginners can work this pattern using the Video Tutorial.
Stiches Used and Abbreviations
Ch= chain
Sl st = slip stich
St(s) = stitch(es)
YO= yarn over
TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch
TKS = Tunisian Knit Stitch
TKS2tog = Tunisian Knit 2 together
M1 – TFS = Make 1 with Tunisian Full Stitch (in between the previous stitch and the next stitch)
TPS = Tunisian Purl Stitch
NRP = Normal return/reverse pass (YO, pull through 1 loop, *(YO, pull through 2 loops)* Repeat until 1 loop remains on hook

Dimensions & Gauge
Hat 9” high and 22.5” in circumference
Cowl 6” high and 20” circumference
9 rows = 3” 16 sts = 5”
Instructions
COWL
START: Foundation Row:
Chain 18 (or any amount to give height of cowl you desire. (See video for how to choose your own size)
Pull up a loop in back bump of 2nd chain from the hook and every chain to the end.
Return – Normal Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 loop. *(YO, pull through 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook.
- Work SECTION B Row. (see below)
- Alternate the below combined sections to your desired circumference. I worked 10 of these sections for both the hat and the cowl. [A+B and C+B] x 5.
- You can end on either (A+B) or (C+B.)
- SECTION A + SECTION B
- SECTION C + SECTION B
- BIND OFF in TKS. Leave 20” tail for sewing.
- SEW Starting Row to Ending Row using mattress stitch INTO TUBE. Fold cowl in half with starting and ending edges touching. Sew the two edges together using the mattress stitch going in and out of the center of each edge stitch. As you go along sewing, every so often gently snug the seam so that it is secure but not bunched up.
- Finishing: Sew in ends in back ridges.
HAT
START: Foundation Row
Chain 28 (or any amount to give height of hat you desire. Must be multiple of 8 + 2.) (See video for how to choose your own size)
Pull up a loop in back bump of 2nd chain from the hook and every chain to the end.
Return – Normal Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 loop. *(YO, pull through 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook.
- Work SECTION B Row. (see below)
- Alternate the below combined sections to your desired circumference. I worked 10 of these sections for both the hat and the cowl. [A+B and C+B] x 5.
- You can end on either (A+B) or (C+B.)
- SECTION A + SECTION B
- SECTION C + SECTION B
- BIND OFF in TKS. Leave 20” tail for sewing.
- SEW Starting Row to Ending Row using mattress stitch INTO TUBE. Fold cowl in half with starting and ending edges touching. Sew the two edges together using the mattress stitch going in and out of the center of each edge stitch. As you go along sewing, every so often gently snug the seam so that it is secure but not bunched up.
- With a long piece of yarn, close up top of hat by weaving yarn in and out of left hand edge stitches. Cinch yarn and tie knot. Sew in ends on the inside of the hat, going around several times to fully secure the top.
- Add a Pom Pom – optional. See “Snowdrifts Hat & Cowl” for instructional video:

- Finishing: Sew in ends in back ridges.
SECTION A – 4 Rows (see diagram below)
Row 1: Starting in 2nd stitch, *(2 TKS, M1-TFS, 4 TKS, TKS2tog)” Repeat * to * until the 2nd to last stitch. TSS in Edge stitch. <82 loops>
Return – Normal Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 loop. *(YO, pull through 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook.
Row 2: Starting in 2nd stitch, *(3 TKS, M1-TFS, 3 TKS, TKS2tog)” Repeat * to * until the 2nd to last stitch. TSS in Edge stitch. <82 loops>
Return – Normal Return Pass:
Row 3: Starting in 2nd stitch, *(4 TKS, M1-TFS, 2 TKS, TKS2tog)” Repeat * to * until the 2nd to last stitch. TSS in Edge stitch. <82 loops>
Return – Normal Return Pass:
Row 4: Starting in 2nd stitch, *(5 TKS, M1-TFS, 1 TKS, TKS2tog)” Repeat * to * until the 2nd to last stitch. TSS in Edge stitch. <82 loops>
Return – Normal Return Pass:
SECTION B – 1 Row
Row 1: Starting in 2nd stitch, TKS in every stitch to the 2nd to last stitch. TSS in Edge stitch. <82 loops>
Return – Normal Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 loop. *(YO, pull through 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop remains on hook.
SECTION C– 4 Rows
