Introducing the “Lovely Mandala Trivet”

Learn to Make a Mandala Trivet

Learn to make a beautiful trivet with multiple colors. In this pattern you will learn color changes, crocheting in the round, and different types of double crochet clusters. You can make this in 6 colors or any combination that you like including just 1 color. This is a super fast project that makes a great gift especially if you make a set in different colors. Materials:

You will need: approximately 100 yards (or more) total of worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn. You can use up to 6 different colors. You can use any color combination you like or you can even make this in one solid color.

I used 6 colors of (10-30 yards each). Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 100% Cotton yarn.

Colors in the Valentine’s Day version (bright pink) starting at the center out:

41, 40, 62, 44, 39, 45

Pattern Instructions

Difficulty Level

Easy to Moderate. Advanced Beginners can work this pattern using the Video Tutorial.

Stiches Used and Abbreviations

Ch= chain

YO = yarn over

DC = double crochet

SC = single crochet

Sl St = slip stitch

St(s) = stitch(es)

4DC Shell = 4 DC sts into the Ch2 space.

5DC Shell = 5 DC sts into the Ch2 space.

2DCtog (2DC Cluster) = 2DC together in same stitch:

YO, insert hook into st (stitch), YO pull thru a loop, (3 loops on hook),

YO pull through 2 loops, (2 loops on hook),

YO, insert hook into st (stitch), YO pull thru a loop, (4 loops on hook),

YO pull through 2 loops, (3 loops on hook),

YO, pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

3DCtog (3DC Cluster) = 3 DC together in same stitch:

YO, insert hook into st (stitch), YO pull thru a loop, (3 loops on hook),

YO pull through 2 loops, (2 loops on hook),

YO, insert hook into st (stitch), YO pull thru a loop, (4 loops on hook),

YO pull through 2 loops, (3 loops on hook),

YO, insert hook into st (stitch), YO pull thru a loop, (5 loops on hook),

YO pull through 2 loops, (4 loops on hook),

YO pull through all 4 loops.

NOTE: Starting chain3 at the start of each round counts as a DC stitch.

Dimensions & Gauge

The trivet made as described is approximately 7” in diameter.

Instructions

NOTES:

  1. I refer to Colors A, B, C, D, E, and F, however, you can use any color combination you like (for example 2 or 3 colors) including just one color.
  2. For Round 5, only work 1: either the Round 5 or the ALTERNATE Round 5. See Video tutorial for a demonstration of both. See BLUE mandala picture below to see how the Alternative version looks.
  3. For assistance with color changes, please refer to the video tutorial.

BEGIN: (Be sure to read notes above)

[COLOR A] Chain 4 and join to first chain with a slip stitch to form a small circle.

Round 1: [COLOR A] Ch1, 12 SC into the circle. Join with sl st to first SC. <<Stitch count: 12 SC>>

Round 2: [COLOR B] Ch3, DC in same st. 2DC in each SC around. Join with sl st to 3rd chain of first ch3.      <<Stitch count: 24 DC>>

Round 3: [COLOR C] Ch3, 2DCtog in between 1st and 2nd DC of previous row, Ch2, *(3DCtog in between next pair of DC from previous row, Ch2)* Repeat * to * to end. Join with sl st to 3rd chain of first ch3.    <<Stitch count: 12 3DC clusters and 12 Ch2 spaces>>

Round 4: [COLOR D] In Ch2 space: (Ch3, 3DC). (If using one color only, slip st over to the ch2 space)

4DC in every ch2 space to the end. Join with sl st to 3rd chain of first ch3.

<<Stitch count: 12 (4DC clusters)>>

Round 5: [COLOR E] Join new color in space between 2 (4DC clusters)

Ch1, SC in that space, Ch2, *[SC in space between 2nd and 3rd DC of next cluster, Ch2, SC in between next 2 (4DC Clusters), Ch2]* Repeat * to * to the end. Join with sl st to first SC.

<<Stitch count: 24 SC, 24 CH2 spaces>>

ALTERNATIVE Round 5: [COLOR E] Join new color in space between 2 (4DC clusters)Ch1, DC in that space into the 3DC cluster of Round 3, Ch2, *[SC in space between 2nd and 3rd DC of next cluster, Ch2, SC in between next 2 (4DC Clusters) into the 3DC cluster of Round 3, Ch2]* Repeat * to * to the end. Join with sl st to first SC.

<<Stitch count: 12 SC, 12DC, 24 CH2 spaces>>

Round 6: [COLOR F] Join yarn in any Ch2 space. Ch1, SC in same Ch2 sp, 5DC Shell in next Ch2 sp, *(SC in next Ch2 sp, 5DC Shell in next Ch2 sp)* Repeat * to * to the end.  Join with sl st to first SC.

<<Stitch count: 12  5DC Shell, 12 SC>>

Finishing

Cut yarn. Pull yarn through last loop. Pull tight to fasten. Sew in ends.
