Introducing the “Scarfie Hat & Cowl Set”

Learn the Tunisian crochet Knit Stitch, Purl Stitch, and Reverse stitch in this cowl with a pretty ribbing effect.

Both the hat and cowl are worked flat and then seamed into a tube.

The ombre color changes in Scarfie yarn make this set very beautiful. This yarn works up into a very soft, light yet warm fabric that you will love.

Let me know your thoughts and share your pics! #ScarfieHatCowl

Materials:

You will need: approximately 300-400 yards (or more) of bulky weight (#5) yarn for this pattern depending on size you make.

I used approximately 1 1/3 skeins of Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn in “Cream/Taupe” (312 yards/skein) to make both the hat & cowl.** So I used a total of about 400 yards.

I always recommend making a swatch to check your gauge to ensure proper fit.

Instructions

NOTES: (diagrams and charts can be found in the PDF version)

  1. Both Cowl and Hat are worked as follows: Beginning Rows Section, Middle Rows Section, and Ending Rows Section.
  2. You can make your cowl circumference bigger or smaller by changing the number of starting chains. Simply choose any multiple of 2. The repeats in the middle section are 4 stitches, however you can simply work a half repeat if needed.
  3. When choosing the size of your hat compare with a hat that you know fits you to get the height and circumference you need. Your hat will be a rectangle that is seamed into a tube and then the top is cinched closed. The long edge of your rectangle will be the circumference and the short side (left and right) will be the seamed edge of the tube.
  4. Choose the hat brim size you will want ahead of time to know how tall to make your rectangle. For instance if you want a 9” tall hat, and you want the brim to be 3” then the total height of your rectangle will need to be 12” tall. (This is your side edges as you make the rectangle)
  5. If following my hat exactly your hat rectangle before any sewing will be 12” high and 22.5” across.
  6. If following my cowl exactly your hat rectangle before any sewing will be 8” high and 24” across.
  7. For demonstrations and detailed descriptions of every step please see the video tutorial for this pattern: https://youtu.be/60e6A3PL6Ls

Fold in half lining up the left hand edge with the right hand edge with the wrong side facing out.

Using the mattress stitch, seam the right hand edge to the left hand edge.

CLOSING TOP OF HAT

  1. Cut a double length of yarn approximately 40 inches long.
  2. Using a double strand to cinch the top of the hat will ensure that the yarn does not break when pulling it very tight.
  3. With a yarn needle weave the yarn in and out of all the bind-off edge stitches.
  4. Pull yarn tight to cinch top of hat so there is no opening.
  5. Tie a double knot.
  6. With yarn needle, bring both tails down through the top of the hat.
  7. Turn hat inside out and sew each tail around the center top of the hat to further secure the cinched top of the hat.

OPTIONAL

Create and attach a POM POM to the top of the hat. For a demonstration of this you can watch the video tutorial for my “Snowdrifts Hat” here: Snowdrifts Part 1, Snowdrifts Part 2

BRIM OF HAT

  1. Fold the bottom 3”-3.5” of the hat up inside the hat.
  2. Try the hat on to make sure the brim placement is correct for your size or compare the measurements with a hat you already know fits.
  3. Turn hat inside out and using stitch markers pin it in 4 places evenly spaced around.
  4. Sew the original starting edge to the same inside ridge all the way around, being sure to keep the stitches from going through to the outside of the hat.
  5. Sew in tails.

Enjoy your Scarfie Hat and Cowl Set!
