Learn to make a Nalbinding style fabric using crochet.

Learn this new type of crochet stitch that you have likely NEVER seen anywhere before! It mimics the ancient needlecraft called “Nalbinding.”

I will show you how to use this stitch in 4 different ways to make 4 different-looking fabrics. Once you play around with this stitch the sky will be the limit in how you might want to modify and explore with it! In this pattern you can make either a simple scarf or a cowl or a trivet, or anything your heart desires!

Nalbinding creates a dense fabric similar to Tunisian crochet and similar looking to Herringbone Knit Stitch.

It would be great for warm sweaters, cuffs on sleeves, brims on hats, as a main stitch for a rug or basket, or as an accent stitch in a plain pattern.

Let me know how you plan to use it!

Can’t wait to see your pictures! #NalbindingCrochet

Dimensions & Gauge

Cowl featured here is 5” high and 21” in circumference.

There are 21″ Stitches and 6 Rows in 4 inches.

Instructions

NOTES:

  1. Determine the height of your cowl or width of your scarf or trivet to determine the length of starting chain for your item.
  2. I recommend making a small swatch to find your gauge.
  3.  See video tutorial for demonstration.

COWL

BEGIN:

Chain a length equal to the height you want for your cowl +3. For mine I chained 27. The height of my cowl featured here is 5” tall and approximately 21” around.

Work in Nalbinding Slip Stitch BLO or your choice of Nalbinding crochet stitch until the piece measures the circumference you desire. I worked a total of 34 rows.

Join beginning edge with last edge using the slip stitch method. This is demonstrated in the VIDEO TUTORIAL HERE.

SCARF

BEGIN:

Chain a length equal to the width you want for your scarf +3. You might want to make a small swatch to determine the gauge of your stitching to get the right measurement.

Work in Nalbinding Slip Stitch BLO or your choice of Nalbinding crochet stitch until your scarf measures the length you desire.

TRIVET

BEGIN:

Chain a length equal to the width you want for your trivet +3. You might want to make a small swatch to determine the gauge of your stitching to get the right measurement.

Work in Nalbinding Slip Stitch BLO or your choice of Nalbinding crochet stitch until your scarf measures the length you desire.

Finishing: Sew in ends.   Enjoy your Nalbinding Crochet Cowl or Scarf! Or Trivet.
