Introducing the “Simple Tunisian Fade Shawl”

Learn to create an asymmetrical shawl using the very easy Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and a simple 1 row repeat pattern!

This is a beautiful asymmetrical shawl pattern with a simple 1-row repeat so it is very easy to make. The shawl is visually mesmerizing and it can be worn in many different ways. There are 3 Fade Sequences you can choose from depending on the yarn you are using. The pattern can be used with either worsted/aran #4 weight yarn or #3 weight yarn. You will use 2 contrasting yarns that can either be solid and/or color-changing.

Pattern:

Materials:

Approximately 600-800 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn combined in multiples colors and also a solid contrasting color. I used:

Yarn I Used:

600 yards total Cascade 220 Superwash Aran Splatter yarn

  • 300 yards in Color #13 (Pink/Purples)
  • 300 yards in Color #16 (Green/Blues)

Below are other yarn options.

Any 2 contrasting solid and/or color-changing yarns in either #4 weight (worsted or aran) or #3 weight. If you have a #5 weight yarn that is on the “light” side such as Scarfie by Lion Brand, would also work fine.

FADE OPTIONS

You will choose one of 3 Fade instructions that outline the row sequences for color A and color B yarns. The sequences are too big to put in this post so I made them into a pdf download. You can either go to the Video and watch them or download a Free pdf with the 3 Fade options to choose from.

Just fill out this form to download the pdf and I will email you the pdf.

(you will also need to confirm your email in order to stay on the pattern newsletter list)

Notes:

  1. Choose your FADE option (see above) based on what yarn you plan to use. See above
  2. There are two “set-up rows” and then the 3rd row is repeated from then on.
  3. Each row of the repeated rows grows by one stitch per row. There are 2 increases at the beginning of the row and 1 decrease at the end of the row, for a net 1 stitch increase per row.

Begin:

SETUP ROWS

Chain 3

R1– Forward Pass  Pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd chain from the hook, and each chain to the end. (don’t turn work) 3 loops on the hook

R1 – Return Pass  YO, pull thru 1 loop, *(YO, pull thru 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop left on hook.

R2– Forward Pass  Chain 1. TFS in first space between 1st and 2nd stitch.

TSS in 2nd stitch.

TFS in space between 2nd and 3rd st.

TSS in Edge st. (5 loops on hook)

R2 – Return Pass  YO, pull thru 1 loop, *(YO, pull thru 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop left on hook.

REPEAT ROW:

R3– Forward Pass Chain 1. TFS in first space between 1st and 2nd stitch.

TSS in 2nd stitch.

TFS in space between 2nd and 3rd st.

TSS in each chain to the 2nd to last stitch. TSS this st and the Edge st together.  (don’t turn work)

(6 loops on the hook)

R3 – Return Pass  YO, pull thru 1 loop, *(YO, pull thru 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop left on hook.

R4 to the End – Repeat R3 Forward and Reverse Pass. Each row will grow by 1 loop (stitch) per row.

CHANGING COLORS

At the end of a return pass, when you have 2 loops left on your hook, complete that last return stitch by pulling a slip knot through of the new color.

For more detailed guidance on changing colors and different ways to “weave in” the ends as you go,

CLICK to see the VIDEO TUTORIAL

FINISHING:

After the last row, Bind Off with TSS slip stitch across to the end. Fasten off. Cut yarn. Sew in ends.
