Dimension & Gauge:

Difficulty Level:
Easy. Great for beginners, especially if you go along with the video tutorial. See below.
Stitches Used and Abbreviations:
Ch = chain | SC = single crochet |
SL ST = slip stitch | DC = double crochet |
YO = yarn over | SK = skip a stitch |
St(s) = Stitch(es) |
Special Stitch: V-Stitch: DC, Ch2, DC, Ch1
Instructions:
Notes:
- Choose the size of your neck opening. = Circumference.
- Begin at the Cowl Neck if you desire that.
- If you don’t want a cowl neck, begin with R3 after making your Neck Opening.
Begin
NECK OPENING
Chain a multiple of 8 to the size of the neck opening that you desire. Join with slip st to first chain, being careful not to twist your chains.
COWL NECK (optional)
R1 Ch4 (counts as DC Ch1), SK 1st st, DC in 2nd ch, SK next Ch, Ch1, *DC in next chain, SK next Ch, Ch1* Repeat * to * to the end. Join with slip st to 3rd chain of your beginning Ch4.
R2 Ch4 (counts as DC Ch1), SK 1st Ch1 , DC in next DC, SK next Ch1, Ch1, *DC in next DC, SK next ch, Ch1* Repeat * to * to the end. Join with slip st to 3rd chain of your beginning Ch4.
Repeat R2 until the cowl neck is the height that you desire. Then begin the increases in the Body.
BODY – increases begin here.
Increase Formula This will tell you where to make your increases so they are symmetrical.
Fill in your values below. Choose A or B
A) Where to Place stitch markers if made with Cowl:
Count your total number of DC’s ____________ divide by 2= X_________ divide by 2= Y__________ Example number of DC’s 68 divide by 2 = X ___34___ divide by 2 = Y ___17___ (In this example your total number of stitches was 136 because we are not counting the chain sts for this formula) -Take the Y value from above. Count out that many DC’s from your first Chain 3, not including the Ch3. On that Yth DC stitch, place a stitch marker. In the example, this would be 17 DC’s from the Ch3. -Take the X value from above. Count out that many DC’s from the first st marker DC, not including that DC.. On that Xth DC stitch, place a stitch marker. In the example, this would be 34 DC’s from the DC with the first stitch marker. |
B) Where to Place stitch markers if made with NO Cowl:
-Count your total number of chains ____________ divide by 2= X_________ divide by 2= Y__________ Example number of chains 136 divide by 2 = X ___68___ divide by 2 = Y ___34____ (In this example your total number of stitches was 136) -Take the Y value from above. Count out that many chains from your first Ch, not including the first Ch. On that Yth chain stitch, place a stitch marker. In the example, this would be 34 chains from the first ch. -Take the X value from above.. Count out that many chains from the first st marker chain, not including that chain.. On that Xth chain stitch, place a stitch marker. In the example, this would be 68 chains from the first stitch marker. |
R3 Ch4 (counts as DC Ch1), SK 1st Ch ,
DC in next St, SK next Ch, Ch1,
*DC in next St, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until first st marker. At St marker: increase with V-stitch (DC, Ch2, DC, Ch1) Replace marker in Ch2 space.
*DC in next St, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until 2nd St marker. At st marker: increase with V-stitch (DC, Ch2, DC, Ch1) Replace marker in Ch2 space.
*DC in next St, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until end of the round.
Join with slip st to 3rd chain of your beginning Ch4.
R4 Ch4 (counts as DC Ch1), SK 1st Ch1 ,
DC in next DC, SK next Ch1, Ch1,
*DC in next DC, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until first st marker. At St marker: increase with V-stitch (DC, Ch2, DC, Ch1) in Ch2 space. Replace St marker in Ch2 space.
*DC in next DC, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until 2nd St marker. At st marker: increase with V-stitch (DC, Ch2, DC, Ch1) in Ch2 space. Replace St marker in Ch2 space.
*DC in next St, SK next ch, Ch1*
Repeat * to * until end of the round.
Join with slip st to 3rd chain of your beginning Ch4.
Repeat R4 until the poncho is the size that you desire.
FINISHING
Cut yarn and sew in ends.
Add borders or fringe if desired.
Add Gathering Cords if desired. (see video tutorial for demonstration)
GATHERING CORDS:
Make 2.
- Make a Chain a little longer than double the length of the poncho from bottom of cowl-neck to the bottom of the poncho at the midway point between the 2 increase points. See diagram points A & B.
- Weave that chain in and out of the mesh vertically at the mid-way point of the poncho from point A to B and then back up again from B to A along the vertical line next to the first weaving. This will be right at where your rounds begin/end. The other place will be on the opposite symmetrical side. See diagram.
- Tie the chain ends together into a knot inside the poncho at point A. Make sure the gathering cord is not too tight.
- Do the same on the other side of the poncho.
- Pull up the gathering cords to level desired and tie a temporary bow inside the poncho. Untie the bow when you want to release the gathering.
- Wear with either 1 or 2 gathers for different styles.
More detailed guidance on gathering cords see the video tutorial below
Or for Diagrams you can purchase the printable pattern at either ETSY or RAVELRY.
