Materials:

Approximately 150 yards of worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn broken down as follows:

5 different colors of #4 worsted weight cotton yarn, approximately 25-30 yards of each.

Colors listed below.

Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream in Orchid**
Crafter’s Secret in Spa Blue, Periwinkle, Vintage Green, Iced Mint, Turquoise**
Other Yarn Options:

Crochet hook.6.0 mm (J). **

NOTIONS

Scissors **
Yarn needle I used: Susan Bates Finishing Needles (Easiest to use) **
Measuring tape **
Stitch markers**

Dimension & Gauge:

GAUGE: (not critical)7 Rows = 2 inches7 Stitches = 2 inches

DIMENSIONS: (approximate)Placemat (4 x 3 squares) = 14.5” x 11”Trivet (2 x 2 squares) = 7” x 7”Coaster (1 square) = 3.5” x 3.5”

Difficulty Level: Easy

Stitches Used and Abbreviations:

Ch = chain	SC = single crochet
SL ST = slip stitch	St(s) = Stitch(es)
YO = yarn over	SK = skip a stitch
BLO – back loop only
TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch	NRP = Normal Reverse Pass
SC2tog = single crochet 2 together in same stitch

SPECIAL STITCHES

SC2tog = insert hook into first st, YO, pull thru a loop, insert hook into next st, YO, pull thru a loop. YO pull thru all 3 loops on your hook.

TSS: insert hook from right to left under vertical loop, YO, pull up a loop.

Normal Return Pass: YO, pull thru 1 loop, *(YO, pull thru 2 loops)* Repeat * to * to until 1 loop left on hook.

Notes:

Work with a regular crochet hook that has a basic straight handle
If you are new to Tunisian use THIS VIDEO to learn this very easy and basic Tunisian Simple Stitch.
You can use any combination of colors. To make it like mine, use 4 complimentary colors for the squares and their edging. Use the Color Guide at the end for planning your colors. And then use 1 contrasting color for the joining and final edging. That is a total of 5 colors. Or try your own combo!
For Trivet make 4 squares. For Placemat make 12 squares.
Coasters can be finished with SC edging, Sl St edging, or no edging as you desire.
See Chart below for guidance.

SQUARES

Begin:

With Color A Chain 10

R1– Forward Pass Pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd chain from the hook, and each chain to the end. (don’t turn work)

R1 – Return Pass YO, pull thru 1 loop, *(YO, pull thru 2 loops)* Repeat * to * until 1 loop left on hook.

R2- Work TSS in 2nd vertical bar and each vertical to the end.

R2 – Work Normal Return Pass.

R3 – R9 Repeat R2

Bind off in slip stitch.

Square Edging

You will make a total of 10 SC stitches per side of your square.

Top side

Join Color B to the first slip st of the bind off.

Ch1, SC in that same stitch.

SC the next 7 sl sts

2 SC in last sl st of that side. The second SC is your first corner st.

Left Side

SC in next 8 edge sts

2 SC in last edge st

Bottom Side

SC in next 8 original chains

2 SC in last original chain

Right Side

SC in next 8 edge sts

2 SC in last edge st

Join with invisible sl st to first SC of the round.

Final Edging for Coasters

Your choice:

No edging
Working SC BLO edging described below, working 1 SC in each st, and 2 SC in each corner st
Work Slip St BLO edging in each st around. In each of the 4 corners, add an additional ch1.
Any other edging of your choice.

Trivet Slip Stitch Joining

See VIDEO TUTORIAL for a full demonstration of the joining method.

Join squares according to Chart below using Slip Stitch join in BLO.

Arrange squares so that they are all aligned the same with the original orientation in which they were made.

So all the tops of the squares will be at the top.

Square 1 and 2:

With Color E, Make a slip knot and Ch1.

Start at bottom inside corners of each square, go thru the back loop (AKA outer loop) of both corner sts.

Hold yarn from behind the work. YO and pull loop thru, sl st to loop on your hook.

Repeat with each corresponding stitch along the squares to the last corner stitch of that side.

Square 3 & 4:

Continue to squares 3 & 4, starting again at the inside bottom corner sts, Slip St in BLO and continue to the top corner sts of squares 3 & 4.

Turn Work 90 degrees and repeat this Sl St BLO join method on the other inside edges.

When you get to the center corner sts, work into these sts a 2nd time for each pair of corner sts.

Don’t cut yarn.

Final Edging

Ch1 and SC2tog in the BLO of the top 2 corner sts.

SC BLO in each stitch around.

Make 2SC in each of the 4 corner sts.

Join with invisible sl st to first SC.

Placemat Slip Stitch Joining and Final Edging

Work using the same method as for the trivet.
