Introducing the “Regina Caeli Circle Shawl”

Learn to work with V-stiches, Double V-Stitches, and Shells.

The name Regina Caeli (chay-lee) was chosen because of the inspiring cosmic shape and textures of this crochet circle shawl. This is a fast and simple pattern that results in an intricate and versatile garment.

Makes a great Wedding Shawl crochet pattern. Fast and easy to make. Beautiful and Elegant. See photos at bottom of this post.

The Shawl has 4 segments that grow by 2 stitches in each row, 1 at the beginning of the segment and 1 at the end of the segment.
There are 3 Spines between each segment, made of 2 DC’s
Between each Segment and each Spine, there is a chain 1.
In total, the shawl grows by 8 stitches in each row of the main shawl.

YARNS

You can make this shawl in ANY Size ANY Yarn and with ANY Hook! It grows from the top down so any size will work. See the video tutorial below for how to turn a mini version of this shawl into a pretty cowl.

I made several of these shawls in various sizes. See all the photos below.

I used several different yarns including:

(2 skeins) Lion Brand Mandala (Troll), – about 675yards

Lion Brand Mandala Ombré (Tranquil),

(2 skeins) Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool (Brown Heather), – about 563 yards

(1 skein) Urth Yarns Uneek (6004),

Loops & Threads Silky Soft ( Snow, Orchid, Violet) plus many others.

Dimension & Gauge:

You can make this shawl any size as it is worked from the top, down. Mine ranged from 15” tall to 30” tall.

You can use any yarn, hook and gauge you like.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Stitches Used and Abbreviations:

Ch = chain	SC = single crochet
SL ST = slip stitch	DC = double crochet
YO = yarn over	5 DC Shell – Work 5 double crochets into 1 stitch.
SK = skip a stitch	4 DC Shell – Work 4 double crochets into 1 stitch.
St(s) = Stitch(es)	Double V-Stitch – 2 DC, Ch1, 2DC (in same st)
2DC-V – 2 DC into same stitch	V-Stich – DC, Ch1, DC (into same stitch)

MAIN BODY SHAWL

Begin: Ch 10.

Row 1

Standing dc in first ch,

*ch 1, dc in next 2 ch, ch 1, dc in next ch* repeat * to * 2 more times. Turn.

Row 2

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st,

*ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next dc* repeat * to * 2 more times. Turn.

Row 3

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc,

*ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc*

repeat from * to * 2 more times. Turn.

Row 4

Segment 1:

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, dc in all dc except last st in the segment, 2 dc in last dc of secgment,

Segments 2,3, and 4:

*ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, ch 1, 2dc in first st of segment, dc in all dc except last st in the segment, 2 dc in last dc of secgment*

repeat from * to * 2 more times. Turn.

Repeat Row 4

Until you have the size you desire.

NOTES

Each row increases +8 dc total (2 per segment × 4 segments)
Segment sizes now:
- Row 2 → 3 dc
- Row 3 → 5 dc
- Row 4 → 7 dc
- Row 5 → 9 dc
And so on.

LACE EDGING (optional)

Begin the lace edging AFTER any row where the number of DC’s in each segment is one of these values:7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 39, 43, 47, 51, 55, 59, 63, 67, 71 and so on. Just keep adding 4 to go further. These are the main body rows AFTER which you could start the Lace Edging.
